At Dorset Software we believe that training, both initial and ongoing, is key to company success.
New Starters
Starting a new job can be a daunting experience! We want our new recruits to feel at home as quickly as possible, so you will work alongside other new graduate recruits and will be looked after by one of our Technical Trainers, whose job it is to help you settle in and find your way around.
You will also have the chance to talk things over with a member of our management team, both at the end of your first week and again after three months. The aim of these meetings is to ensure that you are secure and comfortable and know what is required of you.
Of course, should any concerns arise after your first week you don't have to wait until your three-month meeting before raising them - we are all very approachable and keen to help sort out any worries as quickly as possible!
Probationary Period
The first four months at Dorset Software are your probationary period, during which time new recruits concentrate on acquiring as much knowledge as possible through a combination of self-study, in-house training sessions and a series of practical exercises.
In-house training comprises both informal workshops and more formal courses, given by other staff within the company who have knowledge and expertise in a particular area.
During the last month of your probationary period you will be asked to undertake a mini project. This is designed to give you the opportunity to show what you have learnt and allow us to confirm that you have completed your probationary period successfully.
Ongoing Training
After their probationary period, each member of staff will receive ongoing training. In the case of junior staff, training tends to focus on those core topics most useful at Dorset Software, although a certain amount of choice is permitted and non-standard courses can also be considered if sufficiently justified.
Senior staff are deemed to have a wider and firmer base knowledge and are accordingly permitted greater scope in their choice of course.
Dorset Software's training programme is under the management of two senior Team Leaders who assess course content with instructors during regular training appraisals. Courses are subject to continuous review, thereby ensuring that all staff have access to courses whose content is pitched at the correct level and that the courses are useful to both the company and the individual.
If there is sufficient demand, courses are held on-site; otherwise staff attend alternative venues around the country, as appropriate.
