What made you decide to apply for a job at Dorset Software?
During my PhD I created interactive experiments in Python, which was my first experience with development. I really enjoyed this aspect of my degree which led me to want to pursue a career in software development. Without any commercial experience, I wanted to find somewhere that would invest the time to provide me with the required skills and knowledge to get started in this field. The extensive training programme offered by Dorset Software really attracted me.
How did you find the application and recruitment process?
The process was fast and straight-forward. I received an invitation for a preliminary interview within a couple days of submitting my CV and had a face to face interview two weeks later. Travel and accommodation were paid for by Dorset Software which made it easy and affordable to come down from Manchester. The interview day provided great insight into the company and the staff were very open and honest about the work, which helped to decide whether it would be a good fit for me.
What was your training like?
It can be fast paced at times and a lot of content is covered in those 5-6 months, but I never felt rushed and always had colleagues and trainers on hand to help when I got stuck. I had no prior experience in any of the languages covered in training, but you start with the basics and build from there. The training covers a wide range of topics, including testing, cloud networking and application engineering.
What have you been working on recently?
Lately I’ve been working with a health insurance company, creating multiple web applications in React. We completed various redesigns of their existing consumer portals and created a bespoke quoting tool to allow their corporate customers to get personalised quotes within minutes. Since finishing on that project I have returned to training, which has given me time to brush up on backend technologies before starting with another client.
How have you found the cultural and social aspects of life at Dorset Software?
There is a great social side to the company, from weekly sports and board games to the Friday pub trips. I was well supported in setting up a weekly social football game, where the pitch hire and equipment is fully funded. The company parties are great, with partners and children invited too.
Any top tips for someone starting out at Dorset Software?
Ask your colleagues and trainers plenty of questions, they’ve been in your position and it’s a great way to learn. Get involved in the social activities, everyone is friendly and welcoming!
